INTRODUCTION
- Life appeared on the face of our planet thousands of millions of years ago. Mankind has just arrived.
- Past men were surrounded by permanent danger. They created gods, spirits and monsters, which they later tried to appease with sacrifices and ritual dances.
PRIMATES
- The appearance of the first primates.
- Lemurs
- Change in the earth climate. Vast areas of forest disappeared. Some tree-dwelling mammals learnt how to adapt themselves to their new environment.
- Human-beings descend from those mammals who abandoned living on the trees.
- With this change in climate, primates experienced gradual transformations.
- The change to a more upright posture.
HOMINIDS
- About 4 million years ago, there appeared human-beings which were very similar to present day man but were about 1 metre 30 cms. tall. The “Australopithecus”.
- The Homo Habilis.
- The Homo Erectus. The fire.
THE HOMO SAPIENS
- The first Homo Sapiens, or “Neanderthal man”.
- His main activity: hunting
- Characteristics of the Neanderthal man.
- Our own species: the Cro-Magnon man.
