INTRODUCTION
Our brain incorporates and processes all our knowledge.
The human brain is the organ which controls our thoughts. We might say that our mind is the result of our brain at work.
Aristotle said our thoughts and emotions were to be found in our hearts.
Trepanation was already carried out in the Middle Ages to cure madness.
THE NEURONS
Ramón y Cajal discoverd neurons.
Neurons are made up of 3 basic parts: a neuronal body, dentrites and axon.
They are in a state of continuous communication accross the synaptic spaces. Neuro-transmitters.
Our brain is a very demanding consumer of energy.
Electrical impulses produced by our neurons.
The process of neurons from birth to death.
The brain and its electro-chemical language.
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
The nervous system of superior animals is what regulates and governs the function of each and every organ.
The involuntary system of nervous control assures respiration, blood circulation, digestion and hormonal secretion.
The voluntary system of nervous control receives external stimuli and transmits orders to our organs. The central nervous system is formed by the brain and the spinal column.
The encephalon: the brain, the Rachidean bulb, the cerebellum.
The size of the encephalon does not imply a greater intelligence.
Within the species what is important is the relation between the brain’s volume and the rest of the body.
The most intelligent animals.
STRUCTURE OF THE BRAIN
Intelligence is related to the brain’s structural complexity.
Structure of the brain: two cerebral hemispheres, the corpus callosum, the limbic system, the cortex, the 4 lobes.
Each hemisphere controls different functions.
