|
INTRODUCTION
- Until only a short time ago the world of the living-beings was classified into only two categories: animal and vegetable. Nowadays, we differenciate three other kingdoms mainly made up of microorganisms
- The monera kingdom and the protist kingdom
- Viruses
THE PROTIST KINGDOM
- Features of the beings belonging to the protist kingdom
- Protozoa. The trypanosome. The amoebas. The paramecium. Stentors
- The plasmodia
- What do the protozoa feed off? The phytoplancton
- The monera kingdom . The algae and the cyanobacteria
THE FUNGI KINGDOM
- Definition and features of the fungi
- Functions of the fungi
- The penicillin. Moulds
THE MONERA KINGDOM
- Features of the cyanobacteria
- The cianophilic algae
- Features of the bacteria
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BACTERIA
- We usually think of bacteria as being negative: plagues, cholera, tuberculosis
- However, the majority of bacteria are beneficial
- They are mainly responsible for the decay of the dead organic matter. This way they help to recycle the basic elements which make life possible
